Eighteen

Seated in front of his desk computer, Cadby watched two red dots move on the Pittsburgh map grid. Lucas and Lydia had left the research center.

Idris looked over the sergeant’s shoulder and frowned. “They’re leaving the research center? Why are they moving? They haven’t carried out their mission already, have they?”

Cadby smiled. “No. We have a bit longer to wait before we can signal their tracers from the radio towers. Then we have complete control of the two assassins we programmed.”

Idris chewed his cigar. “Too bad we don’t have a visual camera implanted in their eyes so I can watch as it unfolds.”

“Haven’t developed that module yet, but they’ll kill whoever or whatever you ask,” Cadby said, cracking his knuckles.

“As long as Helmsby is in those numbers.”

“He will be, sir. Guaranteed.”

“Good.” Idris said. “Now he’ll regret never joining my research team.”

Cadby turned toward Idris and frowned. “What are you talking about?”

“I offered him the chance to join this project many years ago. He refused and threatened to expose us if he ever discovered who we are. Fortunately, being associated with the military has kept our activities sealed from civilians.”

“I see. So basically you’ve set this experiment around Helmsby just to see if he had been a worthy choice to your team?”

Idris shrugged. “Something like that.”

“That’s why you want his data?”

“It’s exactly why I want his data. If the world believes the man’s a genius, I want to read his discoveries to see how accurate he is.”

Cadby looked confused. He said, “But do you really need to kill him? If he’s as smart as you indicate, why not just take him prisoner and make him work for you.”

Idris shook his head. “He set his moral ground too high. I offered him a lot of money. I mean tons of money. He still shot down my offer. I would have let that go, but he threatened to reveal who we are. Threats, my friend, I won’t let go. I take that personal.”

“I’d hate to be your enemy.”

Idris puffed his cigar, shrugged, but didn’t reply. His eyes leveled an icy glare that made Cadby suddenly shudder. The gaze frightened him. Possessing such sheer hatred, Idris probably didn’t have many friends.

“Sir,” Cadby said. “Imagine how much more you could make Helmsby suffer if you kept him alive. Death is sudden. You’d have no time to relish your revenge. Wouldn’t that satisfy you?”

“You getting soft? No thirst for bloodshed?” Idris asked. His jaw tightened.

“Oh, no. I understand why you have this planned, but I’m just suggesting ways you could prolong that gratification.”

Idris shook his head. “I don’t want him alive. Understood?”

Cadby nodded. “Yes, sir.”

“Now be certain these tracers work when the radio signals them.”

“They will.”

“In case they don’t, I have something else planned.”

“What?”

Idris smiled. “I’m sending helicopters to the research center to destroy everything—Helmsby, his friends, and the entire building after I get all his research files.”

“That’s hasty, sir. Give the tracers a chance.”

“I’m already concerned that your tracer chips aren’t working properly. Otherwise they wouldn’t leave the research center without carrying out their orders.
